The state of New Jersey announce its support on legalizing marijuana. Now the governor, Phil Murphy, has propose the deadline for legalization of marijuana by the end of 2018.
Legalization of cannabis will bring in tax revenue and reduce mass incarceration in the state.
Lawmakers will have to act soon in order to pass a bill before the 2019 fiscal year.
Governor Murphy has the support from legislators such as state Senate President Stephen Sweeney.
Some lawmakers disagree such as Senate Ronald Rice introduced a bill that would decriminalize marijuana. The law would treat pot possession as an infraction, like a traffic violation, instead of a crime. The plan will ease pressure on prison population.
If the governor doesn't convince lawmakers to legalize pot, his team will have a backup plan.
