The government shutdown is affecting millions of workers and people. Now the shutdown is holding back non-violent drug offenders and hemp farmers.
Donald Trump shut down the government on Dec. 22, 2018 to gain democrats support in building the $5 billion wall along the US-Mexico border. Hemp farmers can't cultivate Since the US farm bill lifted growing restrictions, there have been plenty of legal hemp farmers. The government shutdown has caused farmers to stop cultivating with federal water. Non-violent drug offenders are stuck in prison Non-violet drug offenders will be stuck in prison due to the shutdown. The First Step Act is a piece of bi-partisan legislation that reduce the U.S. sky-high prison population. The Act increases resources for job training and other programs meant to facilitate reintegration into society for those who have been federally incarcerated. Approximately 2,600 inmates eligible for release and some have already made for it to freedom. Stated by The Marshall Project estimated that 4,000 prisoners are eligible for release under the First Step Act. Many of the prisoners must continue to wait in prison.
