The percentage of women smoking weed while pregnant has increase. More and more soon-to-be mothers have been using cannabis to help cope with stress, pains and anxiety.
According to new studies by JAMA, women that are pregnant has been using marijuana before finding out that they were pregnant or during gestation. The number of marijuana users for pregnant women has risen from 4.2% to 7.1% between 2009 and 2019. The study also shows that young pregnant women, ages 18 and under, that use cannabis has grew from 12.5% to 21.8% during those time period. Women between the ages of 18 to 24 has also grew from 9.8% to 19%.
Use of marijuana during pregnancy can have affects to your child. Research stated that babies born to women who smoke during pregnancy were 375 grams lighter than average. The combination of increased risk for low gestational weight and preterm birth puts babies at a great chance for NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). Women that smokes cannabis during pregnancy can also can effect breastfeeding and even cause a higher risk for stillbirth or preterm.
